A small Chihuahua caused confusion on a major highway in New York after escaping and running across the lanes.
A video captured the moment when drivers desperately tried to catch the dog, named Bean, after spotting him running along the Staten Island Expressway on Tuesday night.
The now-viral footage shows cars slowing down with flashing warning lights before a driver stopped and pursued on foot.
“When I saw that dog, my instincts just kicked in, and the only thing on my mind was making sure that dog arrived safely,” said driver Katie Marie, whose camera recorded the rescue mission for the little dog.
“When I looked back, I saw over 20 cars all pitching in, which was extremely heartening to see how Staten Islanders come together as a community on a busy highway to help a dog with an uncertain fate.”
Driver Ella Wolskawoja eventually leaped out of her car to chase Bean on foot along the road, while he continued to evade her grasp.
Bean’s getaway ended happily when driver Kaitlyn McGinley finally managed to catch him in a blanket and put him in a bag amidst applause.
Later photos showed Bean safely back at home, reunited with owner Tammy Richardson, who told ABC that Bean had escaped from her home after being startled by another dog.
